About Wamba Winery

Our winery Enológica Wamba is only 10 years old. Our vineyards and cellar are in Pampliega (Burgos) at 800 mts over sea level, where the temperature difference between night and day is considerable, what helps the maturation and quality of the grapes and the lignification of the plants. The origins of the vineyards in and around Pampliega date back to Roman times. Data from the Middle Ages show that Pampliega supplied wine to the capital, Burgos, in those days.

Until 25 years ago our grandfather operated several hectares of vineyard both for subsistence for sale to residents of the area throughout the year.

In 2005 we decided to plant new vineyards, in the ground where formerly cultivated. We conducted a series of tastings to 1,5 mts deep and analized the terrain to choose the most suitable pattern and higher quality

Our commitment is to recover a wine country tradition, but with current production techniques and development, always respecting the quality of grapes and, of course, wine. Our brands have a meaning related to the history of our town.

We are not in any Designation of Origin because we want to choose and use the type of grapes we feel best and Syrah is one of the grapes type we use, which is not allowed in any of the D.O.s of northern Spain.

Zarzanas multivarietal

Zarzana is a term in the area, as other costs that formerly were the vineyards (“the vine, Entreviñas, Cavarra …”). The name of the winery comes from the Visigoth king Wamba, who lived and died in Pampliega .

Blend: Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot
Maturation: 7 months in French and American oak barrels.
% Alcohol: +/- 14,00%

Tasting notes:

Look: Deep dark cherry color

Nose: Medium to high intensity, with a very strong fruity ripe black fruit (taste blackberry, plum, blueberry). This fruit gives way to a sweet roasted reminiscent to chocolate, toffee, coffee and caramel. This wine will gain complexity and elegance appearing balsamic (mint, eucalyptus), aromas of woods and has a very intense and stable final licorice.

Palate: Sweet in the mouth, broad and powerful, with very fresh and very fine tannins. The memory that remains in the mouth is long with hints of toast and licorice. Balsamic fruity aftertaste.
